Successful RIoT 2017 Sponsored by Espressif

The Republic of IoT (RIoT) was a five-day event consisting of a three-day seminar and a two-day hackathon. The whole event was held in Indonesia’s Digital Valley.

The culmination of a series of IoT events centred around ESP32, previously held in Jakarta, Bogor, Semarang, Surabaya and Medan, took place in Bandung on August 23rd until 27th. RIoT 2017 was organized by the Indonesian IoT company DycodeX and the maker community surrounding it, Ma{k}estro, in collaboration with MyIOTC, a consortium of seven Malaysian IoT companies. An impressive total of 412 participants attended the three-day IoT seminar in Indonesia’s Digital Valley, while another 124 makers, grouped in thirty teams, took part in the two-day Hackathon that followed.

The RIoT Hackathon was officially inaugurated by the Indonesian Minister of Communication and Informatics. More specifically, the minister said in support of the event that: “this country needs innovation [which] can be realized either by creating new products or by improving existing products in new ways”. The Director-General of Informatics Applications from the same ministry also attended the opening ceremony of the RIoT Hackathon, emphasizing the Ministry’s commitment to build on the legacy of RIoT 2017 by selecting certain participants’ ideas and using them in IoT-related pilot projects across Indonesia.

The teams which participated in the RIoT Hackathon were judged by the following IoT experts:

Budi Rahardjo, lecturer at the Electrical Engineering Faculty of Institut Teknologi Bandung and founder of PT INDO CISC

Barry Simorangkir, representing “KOMINFO”, the Indonesian Ministry of Communication and Informatics

Kong Hoon Youn, COO at Cytron Technologies

Muliandy Nasution, Director of Market Development at General Electric Indonesia

Andri Yadi, CEO of PT DycodeX Teknologi Nusantara

Saska, CEO of LabTekIndie

David Bangun, the Director of Business and Strategic Portfolio of PT Telkom Indonesia, was also present as an advisor.

The excitement of the thirty participating teams overshadowed even their need for sleep, as the RIoT Hackathon went on for a total of 22 consecutive hours over the weekend of August 26–27, 2017. The first stage of the hackathon concluded with the best ten teams being chosen to present their projects to the judging panel in a pitching session. These teams were considered the best, in terms of their projects’ originality, prototype, commercial use and potential for future development. The judges also examined each team’s profile, professional background, and commitment to developing their project in the future.

Eventually, the judging panel selected the best three teams below:

1st Prize: 15 million rupiah (1,122 USD) to the “EX team”. This team will also have the honor of representing Indonesia in the ASEAN makerthon, which will be held on September 8th - 10th, 2017, at the Headquarters of the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC), in Cyberjaya, Selangor.

2nd Prize: 10 million rupiah (748 USD) to the “Deadliners”. 

3rd Prize: 5 million rupiah (374 USD) to the “AIM”. 

The title of “Judges’ Favourite” was given to “CIKUR”.

All winners also received Espressif Systems’ ESP-WROVER-KIT. Espressif would like to congratulate all winners and wish the “EX team” good luck at the ASEAN makerthon next week in Malaysia.
