Espressif's support for this pivotal specification update solidifies our company’s commitment to the Matter standard even further.

Espressif Systems is thrilled to announce its support for the latest Matter 1.2 specification, which introduces support for new appliance types. Espressif's support for this pivotal specification update solidifies our company’s commitment to the Matter standard even further.

Matter is an open-source connectivity standard designed to simplify and enhance the development of smart devices and applications. It offers a unified foundation for smart homes, ensuring seamless communication and interoperability across a wide range of products.

With the recent release of Matter 1.2, the specification now encompasses new appliance types:

  • Laundry Washers
  • Refrigerators
  • Dishwashers
  • Air Conditioners
  • Robotic Vacuum Cleaners
  • Air Quality Sensors
  • Air Purifiers
  • Smoke & Carbon Monoxide Alarms
  • Fans

The integration of the above-mentioned appliance types into the Matter ecosystem will enable better control, automation, and interoperability among smart-home devices.

Espressif's support for Matter 1.2 involves adopting the standard and enhancing Espressif's SDK for Matter to ensure compatibility. This significant update underscores Espressif's commitment to providing a versatile and cost-effective platform that empowers developers and entrepreneurs. By supporting the Matter 1.2 specification and the new appliance types it includes, Espressif aims to accelerate the adoption of Matter and provide consumers with a more convenient user experience. The open-source Espressif SDK for Matter provides simplified APIs, tools and utilities for security, manufacturing and production, accompanied by exhaustive documentation. It also includes numerous production references, aimed to simplify the development process of Matter products and enable users to go to production in the shortest possible time. Furthermore, there are production-ready examples of newly added device types, such as refrigerators and air conditioners.

The recent update on Espressif's SDK for Matter also brings in compatibility with Intermittently Connected Devices (ICDs). These ICDs are common battery-operated devices, such as contact sensors, motion detectors, temperature sensors, door locks, and switches. They are engineered to conserve power for extended operational longevity. With this new support, the chances of these devices appearing offline when users or platforms interact with them are significantly reduced. Currently, Espressif's SDK for Matter supports Matter over Thread with Thread-enabled SoCs (e.g., ESP32-H2). There are medium-term plans to include support for Matter over Wi-Fi, utilizing the Target Wake Time capabilities of Wi-Fi 6 on ESP32-C6, in order to negotiate longer sleep intervals while staying connected to the Wi-Fi network.
